Meat Goats in the Texas Panhandle? Click here to read all about it.

Picture of Pitter Patter RanchThe Pitter Patter Ranch is located five miles north of Childress in the Union Flat community in the extreme southeastern Texas Panhandle. We have raised goats for the last eleven years. Our original idea was to avoid the use of herbicides to improve our pasture. We accomplished that goal. We introduced percentage Boer bucks to our commercial does in 1996. The results were dramatic. The range raised wethers were heavy and hardy which resulted in a better year-end profit margin. We decided in 1998 to purchase fullblood bucks. We chose "Doemaker", "KD Hercules" and "Catus Jack" genetics. Our present goal is to strive for excellence in producing an hardy meat goat for 4H and FFA show propects and to achieve a purebred herd.

We are in a heavily infested predator area of the county. We use Komodor/Great Pyrenees cross guard dogs. In our early experiences we found that the Great Pyrenees dogs roamed too far and felt that the Komodors were too docile. We found by accident that the cross better suited our needs. We use a border collie to assist with the daily gathering. She has saved us a million steps and we highly recommend the use of these dogs for the serious goat rancher.

Leigh Rounding up the herdThis is Leigh at work doing her daily chores. She has a 40 acre pasture to sweep. When she leaves the barn she is strictly business. When she returns to the pasture after her first sweep – we know there are some stragglers as depicted in this picture.

we are trying to promote goat ranching in this area of the Southeast Panhandle. This will spread fixed costs and allow for diversification despite the ongoing drought in this part of the state.

We have available this year an improved crop of percentage wethers- some of which are out of our percentage yearling does and will be from 50% to 75% boer cross animals. We are offering them to serious students of FFA and 4H who need the "meat" genetics to win their shows.

The Childress Youth Project Show added a goat division to the livestock show recently. The Grand Champion Wether and Reserve Champion Wether were both produced here. In addition the lightweight division champion of the Collingsworth County show came from our stock.
